Santa Barbara Power Plant
TES project at a power plant, executed by our JV partner Brenmiller
The Santa Barbara Power Plant of Enel has implemented an advanced Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system executed by our JV partner Brenmiller. The patented bGen system enhances the power plant's flexibility by enabling energy shifting and optimizing power generation. The TES system works by storing excess energy during off-peak hours—steam produced by the plant heats crushed rocks, storing thermal energy. During peak demand, the stored heat is released to generate steam, which is then used for electricity production. This process not only reduces start-up times but also increases the speed of load variation, making the plant more responsive and efficient. The system can store up to 24 MWh of thermal energy at around 550°C for up to five hours, providing critical resilience and operational efficiency. The project began operations in 2024.
The Santa Barbara TES system features a 24 MWh capacity, storing energy at 550°C. It enables energy shifting, reduces start-up times, and enhances load flexibility, making the power plant more efficient and resilient.
