First Integrated Environmental Authorization for an off-grid green Hydrogen and E-Methanol production plant with renewable energies at the same location in Spain

Our long-standing partner Viridi has obtained the first Integrated Environmental Authorization in Spain for an off-grid Green Hydrogen and e-Methanol production plant with renewable energies. Our “SolWinHy Cádiz” project, located in Arcos de la Frontera, is a pioneering project at national and European level as it works completely independently of the national power grid and relies exclusively on renewable energy sources. This milestone consolidates Andalusia as a benchmark in the production of clean energy.This facility, powered by a 54 MW wind farm and a 165 MWp photovoltaic installation, will generate 386 GWh of renewable energy annually to fuel 105 MW PEM electrolyzers, which will produce green hydrogen. This hydrogen will then be converted into green e-methanol, positioning SolWinHy Cádiz as a model for future sustainable industrial projects across Europe.Spanning 454 hectares, the project has been declared of “special industrial interest” by the Andalusian Government and assigned to the Andalusian Project Accelerator Unit, which includes initiatives that contribute to achieving the fundamental objectives established in the Statute of Autonomy for Andalusia.

Economic and Social Impact: €300 Million Investment, over 400 Jobs

The development of the plant is expected to require an investment of 300 million euros and the creation of 430 direct and indirect jobs during the construction and operations phases, as well as a training center within the facilities. Since the start of the project, Viridi and Green Enesys have worked closely with regional and local authorities to ensure that all phases of design, implementation and operation are carried out with the highest safety and sustainability standards.

Environmental impact: 95% savings in CO2 emissions

Compared to other fossil fuels, SolWinHy Cádiz's production represents a 95% saving in CO2 emissions, including those derived from the transport of the final product and the necessary supplies, and adheres to the objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, as set out in the European Climate Regulation.

The SolWinHy Cádiz project, whose construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2025, will produce around 5,500 tons of Green Hydrogen and 29,000 tons of green e-Methanol per year through a process of electrolysis with water and subsequent synthesis with biogenic CO2.

SolWinHy Cádiz will obtain the water needed for hydrogen production from the La Gallarda Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Arcos de la Frontera. This infrastructure will guarantee the supply of regenerated water through an interconnection pipeline that allows for efficient and responsible use of water resources. In this way, the project will contribute to water conservation and minimizing environmental impact.

A new benchmark for green Hydrogen and e-Methanol production

This authorization marks a major milestone for Viridi and Green Enesys and a further step towards the transition to a decarbonized energy economy. The SolWinHy Cádiz project will not only accelerate the energy transition in Spain but will also become a benchmark for future renewable energy developments across Europe.
